The Birthplace of the Tahoe Yacht Club

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Few people realize that the modern Tahoe Yacht Club was born at Fleur du Lac.

Although the Tahoe Yacht Club lists its inception date as 1924, the club was actually founded as the Tahoe Power Boat Club in that year by Edwin Letts Oliver, its first Commodore. E. L. Oliver, as he preferred to be called, was an early participant in wooden speed boat races on Lake Tahoe and maintained a beautiful summer home in Idlewild, later renamed Tahoe Pines.

Fleur du Lac was constructed near the Oliver summer home in 1935. When Henry Kaiser Sr. was elected Commodore of the Tahoe Power Boat Club in 1938, he held his first meeting as Commodore in what was then known as "Harbor House" on the grounds of Fleur du Lac. At that July, 1938 meeting, the governing body of the Club decided to change the name of the Club to Tahoe Yacht Club. They also adopted the burgee design shown here. Both the name Tahoe Yacht Club and the burgee are still in use today.
